Cullman’s Owen Lovell Named Alabama’s Mr. Baseball

Birmingham, AL – Cullman Bearcats junior pitcher, Owen Lovell, was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s 2016 Mr. Baseball at the ASWA’s 45th annual convention in Birmingham.

The 6’5, 225 lb. junior, who is committed to the University of Alabama, joins 2013 honoree Keegan Thompson as  the second Cullman Bearcat to win the award. The Bearcats are the only program with multiple award winners since the association began presenting the honor in 1999.

On the mound, Owen pitched three shutouts in route to a 7-1 record with a 1.51 ERA and 63 strikeouts. He allowed 39 hits in 51 innings.

At the plate, he hit .392 with 15 home runs and 64 RBI’s.

Lovell has a shot at repeating as the award’s only repeat winner next season.  He joins last years recipient, Florence’s Brax Garrett, as the only two underclassmen to win the award.

In addition to being named Mr. Baseball, Lovell has been named 6A Player of the Year, Louisville Slugger first team All-American and American Family All-USA Baseball second team.
