Gardendale victory ends Alabama’s longest home game winning streak

Muscle Shoals, AL – The Gardendale Rockets (1-0) put an end to the state’s longest home game winning streak Friday night in north west Alabama.

Matt Plunkett’s Rockets held the Muscle Shoals Trojan offense to just 10 points in route to a 14-10 victory at James F. Moore Stadium.

The Trojans (0-1) hadn’t lost a game on their home turf since falling to the Florence Falcons September 24th, 2010.

Neither the streak or the Trojans recent success on the gridiron phased the Rockets offense which out gained Muscle Shoals by over 200 yards, 321-118.

The Rocket offense lit up the scoreboard early with a first quarter touchdown run by senior Omari Burton.   Later in the first, the Trojans Jordyn Peters blocked a Rocket punt, setting up a 36 yard Braden Galowitch field goal, trimming the Gardendale lead to 7-3.

Rockets running back Demetrius King increased the Gardendale lead to 14-3 just before the break.

Muscle Shoals’ tailback Carlos Davis trimmed the lead back to four with a forth down 56 yard run late in the third quarter.  The Trojans threatened late, driving deep into Rocket territory but the drive was stalled by a tipped ball interception to effectively end the streak and give the Rockets a huge 6A opening game W.

The Gardendale defense stood strong, holding the Trojans to only 35 yards through the air and 3 of 14 on third downs.

The Rockets will look to improve to 2-0 Friday night against the 7A James Clemens Jets (1-0) at Driver Stadium.

Muscle Shoals will to travel to Hoover to take on the 2015 7A state runner-up Spain Park Jaguars (1-0) in what will be a PrepsNet Featured Match-up.
