Top Ranked Spain Park rolls in region opener

Hoover, AL – The Spain Park Jaguars rolled to 3-0 with a 28-14 win over the Vestavia Hills Rebels (2-1) at Bob Finley Field.

The Jaguar passing attack, lead by quarterback Hunter Howell, paved the way with 221 yards through the air, including completing 22 of 19 passes and three touchdowns against the previously unbeaten Rebels.

Spain Park got on the board midway through the first quarter on a Larry Wooden run from inside the 5 yard line.

Vestavia held the Jaguar passing game in check until Hunter Howell connected with receiver Thomas Jordan halfway through the second period putting the home team up by two scores.

Vestavia quarterback Mitchell Langley and receiver Coleman Petway hooked up on a pass from inside the 10 yard line to close the gap to 14-7 as time expired in the second quarter.

After the break, Howell got back to work, scoring on a 24 yard strike to William Mee from 24 yards out increasing the Jaguar lead to 21-7.

Buddy Anderson’s Rebels answered back with a William Schaffeld score from inside the 1 yard line with under three minutes to play pulling Vestavia to within a touchdown.

The Jaguars extended their lead to two touchdowns with under a minute to play in the 3rd as Howell and Wooden connected for their second score of the night.  Cole Starr’s fourth extra point secured a 28-14 region opening win for the home standing Jaguars.

The Jags defense held the Rebels to only 52 yards passing, connecting on 6 of 9 attempts.

Spain Park (3-0) travels to the Hoover Met Friday night to take on cross town rival Hoover (2-1)

Vestavia Hills will travel to Herdmont Park to take on a winless Oak Mountain Eagles (0-3) squad.
