Mtn. Brook repeats as state lacrosse champions

Birmingham, AL – The Mountain Brook Spartans brought home their fourth Alabama high school men’s lacrosse title after a two-day battle with the top ranked Vestavia Hills Rebels.

The Spartans lead the Rebels 7-6 when play was paused due to weather Saturday afternoon. When the final horn sounded at Birmingham-Southern College, 24 hours after the opening face-off, the Spartans had notched their second consecutive varsity lacrosse title with a 12-10 victory over the previously unbeaten Rebels.

Vestavia capped the 2019 season at an impressive 19-1. Over the past three seasons, Randy Nace’s Rebels have complied a 48-4 record with three title game appearances and a state championship.

In Thacher Worthen’s first season at the helm of the Mountain Brook lacrosse program, the Spartans posted a 14-1 record putting a league leading 197 goals between the pipes while giving up 71.

Worthen and Nace will face each other again Saturday afternoon as opposing head coaches in the Alabama High School Lacrosse All-Star Classic.
