Mtn Brook takes down Hewitt-Trussville with miracle conversion

Mountain Brook, AL – A miraculous final 10 seconds lifted the fifth ranked Mountain Brook Spartans (7-0, 5-0) over Hewitt-Trussville (4-4, 1-4) 11-10 Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

“In 38 years of coaching I’ve never been a part of a game like this. I’ll probably never see another game like this as a player, coach or spectator.” Mountain Brook head coach Chris Yeager said after the Miracle at Spartan Stadium.

Trailing 10-3 with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth Spartan quarterback Strother Gibbs lead a drive, that included a pair of fourth down conversions, capped by a Gibbs to Jake Thompson score on 4th and 6 with 13 seconds to play. The grab pulled the Spartans within one and setup the immaculate conversion.

An ill-fated lateral, which looked to be dribbling out-of-bounds, was wrangled by junior Paulson Wright and heaved toward the the endzone, landing in the hands of sophomore receiver Jake Thompson.

The conversion secured the Spartans fourth straight trip to the postseason, Mountain Brook’s 10th trip to the playoffs in the Chris Yeager era.  

The lose eliminated the Huskies from the postseason for the first time since 2012.

Spartans junior signal caller Strother Gibbs finished the game with 144 yards through the air, completing 13-of-17 throws and a touchdown. Jake Thompson hauled in 5 passes for 70 yards including the the game winner while Sam Higgins carried the ball 23 times for 70 yards.

Hewitt quarterback Jackson Holland completed 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards and a rushing score.

The Spartans travel to Alabaster next Friday night to take on reigning region 3 champion and top ranked Thompson (7-0, 5-0) with the winner likely coming away with the region crown.

Hewitt travels west to take on the winless Tuscaloosa County Wildcats (0-7, 0-5).
