Pleasant Grove advances to 5A title game with 16-14 victory over Briarwood

Birmingham, AL – For the second time in program history, the Pleasant Grove Spartans have advanced to the AHSAA state title game. The Spartans punched their ticket to Jordan-Hare with a 16-14, come-from-behind victory over the Briarwood Christian Lions Friday night at Lion’s Pride Stadium.

Luke Prewett lead the Lions on the ground with 55 yards on 6 carries, including a 28 yard touchdown run. Luke Reebals added 46 yards on 14 carries while freshman quarterback Christopher Vizzina completed 8-of-15 throws for 15 yards, highlighted by a 25 yard first half scoring strike to receiver Blake McKenna.

Spartan junior signal caller Zuquez Perryman passed for 182 yards, connecting on 13-of-19 passes and a pair of touchdowns. Tyler Christopher lead Pleasant Grove on the ground with 149 yards on 21 carries while Chris Lewis hauled in seven receptions for 83 yards including the game winning touchdown grab.

The Lions closed out head coach Matthew Forester’s first season at the helm of the Lions program at 12-2, including the program’s 18th region title and wins over 6A Hueytown, No. 2 ranked Ramsay, previously undefeated Bibb County and a forfeit victory over arch rival Chelsea.

Pleasant Grove faces off against defending 5A state champion Central-Clay County Thursday night at 7:00 PM at Auburn University’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
