Barbour Co. cancels all sports for 2020-2021 season

Birmingham, AL – According to multiple reports, Barber County will become the third Alabama school district to opt out of the 2020 football season.

PrepsNet reported Monday that Greene and Sumter counties would not be competing in athletics for the first nine weeks of the school year.

Barbour County will not only sit out the fall sports season but plans to cancel all athletics for the 2020-2021 school year.

The story was first reported by News 4 in Dothan.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) announced last week that the association would be moving forward with the fall sports season as scheduled. Individual school districts have the autonomy to decide wither or not to field teams during the pandemic.

Barbour County struggled to a 0-10 finish on the gridiron in 2019 but the Jaguar men’s basketball squad advanced to the AHSAA state finals before falling in the title game to Calhoun.
