No. 2 Mountain Brook takes down Chelsea 35-21

Mountain Brook, AL – The second ranked Mountain Brook Spartans knocked off the Chelsea Hornets 35-21 Friday night at Spartan Stadium to complete their undefeated run through class 6A Region 5. 

The win improved the region champion Spartans to 8-1 on the season, 6-0 in region play.  Chelsea slipped to 3-6 (2-4) with one game remaining in 2020. 

Mountain Brook secured their fifth consecutive postseason birth and 10th season with at least eight wins since head coach Chris Yeager took over the Spartans program in 2006.  

The Hornets, who have been hit hard by injury and are missing several players due to COVID-19 contact tracing, will miss the playoffs for the sixth time in the last 10 seasons. 

Senior Spartans signal caller Strother Gibbs completed 10-of-19 passes for 139 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 129 yards and a score on the ground. Receiver Paulson Wright was Gibbs’ favorite target hauling in five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown while Michael Brogan added 102 yards an a score on the ground.  

Chelsea will host the 3-6 Calera Eagles next Friday night to close out their 2020 campaign.  Mountain Brook will travel to Decatur to take on the 7A Austin Black Bears (8-1) to cap the regular season, they will return to Spartan Stadium to face Muscle Shoals (6-2) in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs on November 6th.
