Oak Mountain basketball standout Will Shaver commits to North Carolina

Birmingham, AL – Oak Mountain High School big man Will Shaver became the first player to commit to the North Carolina Tar Heels 2022 class on Wednesday. 

The three star 6-foot-10, 245 pound center previously planned to announce his college choice on his 18th birthday, September 17th.  He had planned official visits to  Kansas, Virginia Tech, Purdue, Iowa and Wake Forest but decided to become the first player to commit to new UNC head coach Hubert Davis after two days in Chapel Hill.

Shaver plans to forgo his senior season at Oak Mountain and enroll in a prep school before joining the Tar Heels in 2022.  

As a junior, Shaver lead the Oak Mountain Eagles to the first state hoops title in school history in 2021 while averaging 14.3 pounds and 7.7 rebounds a game while blocking 50 shots.  He was also named to the ASWA Class 7A All-State second team. 

Ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Alabama for the 2022 class and the 147th player nationally by the 247 Composite he currently holds offers from 12 Division I programs including North Carolina, Iowa, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Alabama, Florida State, Georgetown, Illinois, Samford, Stanford and UAB.
