No. 6 Mountain Brook shuts out second ranked Briarwood Christian 14-0

Mountain Brook, AL – The No. 6 Mountain Brook Spartans blanked second ranked Briarwood Christian 14-0 Thursday night at Spartan Stadium. 

The shutout victory improved the Spartans to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in Class 6A Region 5 play.  The Lions slip to 7-1, 4-1.  

The stout Spartan defense aided by an offensive and special teams score sealed the crucial region win for the home team.  

Mountain Brook lit up the Spartan Stadium scoreboard with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter as Jake Thompson fielded a punt deep in Spartan territory retuning it 75 yards for a score.  Jackson Beatty put the Spartans up by two scores on their next possession, capping a 7 play drive with a 10 yard scoring strike from quarterback John Colvin.  

The Lions threatened late but a late game interception by Braxton Dean put the game on ice for the region leading Spartans.

Colvin finished the night with 165 yards through the air, completing 10-of-17 passes with a touchdown.  Jackson Beatty was Colvin’s favorite target, hauling in two passes for 59 yards and a score.  Cole Gamble and George Cain each chipped in 36 yards rushing for the Spartans while Will Waldrop rolled up 12 yards on six attempts and added a pair of receptions for 39 yards.  

Briarwood signal caller Christopher Vizzina completed 24-of-43 throws for 232 yards and an interception.  Ethan Anderson lead the Lion receiving corps with seven receptions for 50 yards.  Cooper Higgins caught seven passes for 50 yards and added five yards on the ground.  

The Spartans travel to Over the Mountain rival Homewood (5-1, 3-0) next Friday night with a chance to wrap up the region title.  Briarwood takes the week off before welcoming the Homewood Patriots to Lions Pride Stadium October 22nd.
