Thompson’s Mark Freeman claims his 9th state football title

Birmingham, AL – Thompson Warriors head coach Mark Freeman took home his 9th state football championship with a 38-22 Super 7 victory over the undefeated Central-Phenix City Red Devils Wednesday night at Protective Stadium.

The victory ties Freeman with coaching legends Terry Curtis (UMS-Wright) and Robby James (Catherine Academy, Morgan Academy, Marengo Academy) for the second most state titles in Alabama high school football history.  Bobby Carr (Edgewood Academy, Autauga Academy) owns 10 state football championships.

Freeman and the Warrior made history as the first team to 3-peat as AHSAA Class 7A state champions.

In addition to his three state titles at Thompson, Freeman claimed a pair of 5A championships during his four year tenure at Spanish Fort and four AISA crowns during a decade at the helm of his alma mater Bessemer Academy.

Freeman’s career head coaching record currently stands at 236-52 including six undefeated seasons, 20 playoff appearances and 12 region championships over 23 seasons.
