Vestavia takes down Homewood in Over the Mountain showdown

Vestavia Hills, AL – A pounding rushing attack pushed the Vestavia Hills Rebels (2-0) past the Homewood Patriots (1-1) Friday night.

The Rebels ground game started early, after a Patriots three and out, Vestavia’s Toliver Chatwood pounded the ball over the goal line from two yards out.

Early in the second quarter, Rebels running back William Schaffeld increased the Vestavia lead on a 10 yard run .46 seconds into the second quarter.   Manraj Singh’s second extra point of the night put the Rebels up 14-0.

The 27 yard line would be a hot spot for both teams for the remainder of the contest.

First, Homewood place kicker, Ibrahima Sylla, put the Patriots on the board with a 37 yard field goal midway through the second quarter, cutting the score to 14-3.

The remainder of the scoring would be provided by Singh.  The Rebel placed kicker knocked through two kicks from the 27 yard line.  The first, as time ran out before the break with the second coming two minutes into the 4th, capping the game at 20-3.

The Rebels out gained the Patriots 288 to 193 yards on the night.

This year’s victory, at Thompson Reynolds Stadium, marks the 10th straight win over the Patriots for Buddy Anderson’s Rebel Squad.

Vestavia holds a 27-18 series all-time against the Patriots.

Vestavia will travel to Hoover Friday night to face the top ranked Spain Park Jaguars (2-0) to begin region play.

Homewood will host 6A region 5 foe Parker (1-0) at Waldrop Stadium.
