Pinson Valley hires former Auburn QB

Pinson, AL – Pinson Valley High School has a new leader on the gridiron.

PrepsNet has confirmed that Scottsboro Wildcats head coach Patrick Nix will be taking over the same position at Pinson Valley, pending Jefferson County Board of Education approval.   The board is expected to make Nix’s hire official at their meeting Thursday night in Birmingham.

Nix lead Scottsboro to a 28-18 record over four years including an unbeaten regular season, 5A region 7 championship and a trip to the quarterfinals in 2016.  He guided the Wildcats to a 7-4 record in his first season, including a trip to the post season, the program’s first in four seasons.  Scottsboro posted a 5-25 record over the three seasons prior to Nix’s arrival in Jackson County.

Prior to accepting his first high school head coaching position at Scottsboro in 2013, Nix spent 16 seasons coaching in the collegiate ranks.  He began his coaching career with a three year stint at Jacksonville State.  From there he accepted his first head coaching position at Division II Arkansas’ Henderson State University.  After leading the Reddies offense for two seasons, Nix accepted the recruiting coordinator and receivers coach at Birmingham’s Samford University.  Following a year at Samford, Nix left to become the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at GeorgiaTech.  He was elevated to the Yellow Jackets’ offensive coordinator in 2004, during his final season in Atlanta the Jackets advanced to the ACC Championship.

In 2007, Nix was hired as the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami.  After two seasons and a 12-13 record Nix was dismissed by Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon.

Nix became the wide receivers coach at Charleston Southern.  In his second and final year with the Buccaneers, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.

The Etowah High School graduate rose to prominence during his sophomore season at Auburn University, coming off the bench for injured quarterback Stan White and leading the Tigers to an Iron Bowl win over Alabama.  Nix graduated from Auburn as the school’s career leader in passing efficiency.

Nix will replace former Pinson Valley head coach Matt Glover who was dismissed after going 50-41 and leading the Indians to the postseason the past seven seasons.  Glover was hired as the head coach at St. Clair earlier this month.

His father, Conrad Nix, was a longtime Alabama high school football coach with head coaching stops at Lincoln, Haleyville and Albertville from 1969-1987.

Nix’s son Bo, who will be entering his junior season at quarterback, was a finalist for 5A back of the year.  He currently holds offers from Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee and Ole Miss among others.
