Postgame Recap | Mtn Brook takes down Gulf Shores 56-24

Mtn Brook, AL – The Mountain Brook Spartans kicked off 2017 with one half of explosive offense and another featuring stifling defense to take down the Gulf Shores Dolphins 56-24 Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

The visiting Dolphins sparked early, scoring on a Rett Files pass from inside the five after picking off Spartans quarterback Hamp Sisson’s first pass attempt of the contest.

The Gulf Shores lead would not last long as senior running back Harold Joiner put the Spartans on the board with the first of his four touchdowns of the night, this one from just inside the Dolphin 20.

Early in the second quarter, Joiner dove into the endzone from 10 yards out putting the Spartans on top 14-7.  Sisson connected with Trey Pouncy from 39 yards out with 8:35 left before the break to extend the Mtn Brook lead to 21-7.

The Dolphins pulled to within seven on the next possession on a Cody Daniels 14 yard touchdown run but the one score spread would not last long as Joiner scampered in from the six pushing the Spartan lead to 28-14.

Gulf Shores answered back, traveling 64 yards on three plays capped by a Files to Thor Tobiassen 18 yard strike pulling the Dolphins back to within one score.

Sission called his own number with just over a minute remaining before the break, scoring from inside the 10 and giving the home team a 35-21 lead heading into halftime.

Joiner added his fourth and final score of the night on the Spartans first possession of the third doubling up the Mtn Brook lead 42-21.  On the next Spartan offensive possession A.J. Gates spilled Joiner and showed some scoring power of his own, rushing for 25 yards and the seventh Mtn Brook score of the contest.

Walker McCraney capped the explosive offensive performance for the Spartans, scoring from inside the 10.

The Dolphins connected on a 35 yard field goal late in the third giving the visitors their only points of the second half, capping the scoreboard at 56-24.

Spartan quarterback Hamp Sission finished the game with 10-14 passes for 167 yards and accounted for two touchdowns.

Harold Joiner lead the game in rushing with 195 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries with the majority of his touches coming in the first two quarters.

The Spartans travel 20 miles south to take on the Helena Huskies (0-0) Friday night.  Gulf Shores jumps into 6A region 1 play at rival Baldwin County.
