Postgame Recap | Briarwood takes down Chelsea 19-7

Birmingham, AL – Head coach Fred Yancey’s Briarwood Christian Lions (1-0) defeated the Chelsea Hornets (0-2) 19-7 Friday night at the newly refurbished Lions Pride Stadium.  

This marks the first win for Briarwood over their arch rival since 2011.  The Lions now hold a 20-9-1 series advantage over the Hornets.

Early in the first quarter the two squads traded fumbles with the Lions giving it up on each of their first two possessions.  Chelsea turned it back over to the Lions on their second possession of the game. 

After the back and forth of the first quarter the Lions took a 6-0 advantage going into the break on a 25 yard Michael Hiers to Carson Eddy touchdown toss. 

Late in the third Heirs and Eddy connected again, this time from 18 yards out putting the Lions on top 12-0.

The Chelsea offense came to life on the Hornets ensuing possession as Turner Griffin connected with Lando Nichols to put the visitors on the board.  

Up 12-7 with five minutes and change remaining Briarwood’s J.R. Tran-Reno took the snap from center on fourth and four and hurled a 33 yard touchdown strike, again to Carson Eddy.

A late interception by Briarwood’s Jonathan Hill put the game on ice.  

Heirs connected on 14 of 18 passes for 143 yards.  He rushed for 31 and accounted for two scores.  

Eddy hauled in eight catches for 105 yards and three touchdowns.

Tran-Reno lead the Lions rushing attack with 93 yards on 25 carries and passed for 33.  

Briarwood begins 5A region 5 play Friday night at Moody’s (1-0) Bill Morris Stadium.  

Chelsea travels south for a 6A region 3 clash with Wetumpka (2-0).
