Postgame Recap | Mtn Brook slips past Vestavia in overtime thriller

Mtn. Brook, AL – The ninth ranked Mtn. Brook Spartans improved to 5-2, 3-2 in 7A region 3 play, with a come from behind overtime win over rival Vestavia Hills 17-10 Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

The victory returned the favor from last season’s 17-14 double overtime Rebels victory at Thompson Reynolds Stadium.  Vestavia currently holds a six game advantage over the Spartans in a series that dates back to 1971.

The win placed the Spartans in sole possession of the region’s third playoff spot behind Hoover and Thompson.  Vestavia dripped to 3-4 overall, 2-3, in region play and are tied for the fourth playoff spot with the Spain Park Jaguars.

This victory marked the second overtime victory in three weeks that Mtn Brook has secured at Spartan Stadium.  The first saw the Spartans take down Over the Mountain foe Spain Park 51-50 in double OT.

Mtn. Brook quarterback Hamp Sission finished the night with 47 yards through the air, completing 4 of 10 passes including a game winning six yard strike to Harold Joiner in overtime.

Vestavia signal caller Coleman Pettway completed 10 of 14 passes for 138 yards highlighted by a first half touchdown pass to Ben Willoughby for 49 yards.

The Spartans play their final regular season home game Friday night against the 3-4 (1-4) Oak Mountain Eagles before closing out 2017 on the road at Huffman and Ramsay.

Vestavia hosts arch rival Hoover 6-1 (5-0) Friday night at Thompson Reynolds stadium.
