Postgame Recap | Mtn. Brook turns back a 28 point Oak Mtn. surge to improve to 6-2

Mtn. Brook, AL – The Mtn. Brook Spartans held off a 28 point Oak Mtn. Eagles surge to to escape with a 31-28 region win Friday night at Spartan Stadium. 

The victory improves the Spartans to 6-2, 4-2 in region play, the Eagles slide to 3-5, 1-5 in 7A region 3.

Mtn. Brook jumped to a 21-0 lead before giving up 28 unanswered to the Eagles.  The ninth ranked Spartans score the contest’s final ten late to put the game away.

Running back A.J. Gates lit up the scoreboard first for the Spartans bolting in from two yards out.  Quarterback Hamp Sission called his own number on MBHS’ next drive. Hamp Greene hauled in a 23 yard Sission touchdown pass to put the Spartans in the drivers seat early 21-0.

The visitors would account for the games’ next 28.  Luke Percer began the Eagle rally scoring from 28 yards out.  Carson Bobo snagged a Connor Webb touchdown strike from 30 yards out to cut the Spartan lead to seven going into the break. 

Oak Mtn. picked up where they left off taking the opening drive of the second half 78 yards culminated by a one yard Connor Webb quarterback sneak to tie the game at 21.  on the Eagle’s next possession, Webb connected with Bobo for the pair’s second thirty yard touchdown of the night giving the visitors their first lead of the game late in the third period. 

Late in the fourth the pendulum swung back in favor of the Spartans.  Aiden Hood started the Mtn. Brook rally, splitting the uprights from 28 yards out.  A.J. Gates bookend the contest with his second touchdown run of the night, this one from just beyond the midfield stripe. 

Oak Mtn. mounted a comeback attempt, marching the ball into Spartan territory but a last second Connor Webb Hail Mary was broken up by junior defensive back Connor Bussman. 

The win puts Chris Yeager’s Spartans solidly in 3rd place in 7A region 3 behind the Hoover Bucs and Thompson Warriors

Gates lead the Spartan rushing attack with 131 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.  Sission added 69 yards on the ground while passing for 74 and accounting for two scores.  Standout running back Harold Joiner was sideline with an injury but is expected to return.  

Oak Mtn’s Connor Webb finished the night with 186 yards through the air connecting on 14 of 22 passes, including a pair of touchdowns, while rushing for 78.  Luke Percer piled up 100 yards and a score on 17 carries while Carson Bobo racked up 103 receiving yards and two touchdowns.  

The Spartans return to action Friday night wrapping up region 3 play at Huffman (3-5).  Oak Mtn. travels to Bob Finley Field to take on the Spain Park Jaguars (5-3).
