Postgame Recap | Ramsay upsets Mtn. Brook 28-7

Birmingham, AL – The defending 6A state champion Ramsay Rams closed out the regular season with at 28-7 upset of the  7A Mtn. Brook Spartans Thursday night at Birmingham’s Lawson Field.  

Ramsay’s Terrell Gardner and Kobe Belcher accounted for the Ram’s four scores as Ramsay outscored the eighth ranked Spartans 28-0 through three quarters.  

Gardner put the Rams on the board midway through the first quarter returning a Spartan’s punt 65 yards into the endzone.  

Belcher’s turn came with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter.  The senior dove into the endzone from just outside the two yard line.  Isaiah Bradford connected with Tarez Rutledge for two to put the Rams up 14-0 going into the break.  

The Ramsey fireworks continued in the third as Gardner returned the opening kick of the second half 85 yards into the endzone to extend the Ram lead to 21-0.  

Four minutes later Belcher scampered into the endzone from the ten, Gardner’s second point after of the night put the Rams up 28-0.

The Spartans finally got on the board with just over three minutes to play as A.J. Gates bolted in from just beyond the midfield stripe capping the game at 28-7.  

Gates lead the Spartans on the ground with 99 yards on 13 carries including a 52 yard touchdown run in the 4th.  

Mtn. Brook quartback Hamp Sission completed 9 of 23 passes for 63 yards.  Senior Hamp Green hauled in five catches for 31 yards, Harold Joiner ran for 50 yards on 12 carries.  

The Spartans travel to Madison next Friday to take on the Bob Jones Patriots (7-3) in the first round of the AHSAA 7A playoffs.  Ramsey will hit the road to take on the 6-4 Cullman Bearcats.
