Last second field goal lifts Gardendale past Clay-Chalkville

Clay, AL – The Gardendale Rockets are firmly in the drivers seat in arguably one of the toughest regions in 6A football. Senior placekicker Landon Erbrick split the uprights from 32 yards out as time expired to give the 5-0 Rockets a 38-35 upset win over the 7th ranked Clay-Chalkville Cougars (3-2, 0-2) Friday night at Jerry Hood Field.

The victory marked the first win in program history for Gardendale over their neighbors to the east. The Rockets were previously 0-7 against the traditional plower Cougars.

The Rockets have rattled off five victories in a row for the first time since 2002, a season that saw Gardendale roll to a 10-0 regular season.

The Rockets step out of region play next week, traveling to the Tennessee Valley to take on the Hazel Green Trojans (1-4) before returning home to host the defending 6A state champion Pinson Valley Indians (3-2, 2-1) October 4th at Driver Stadium. Clay-Chalkville takes the week off before returning to region play at Shades Valley (2-2, 1-1) in week six.
