Fyffe repeats as 2A State Champs

Auburn, AL – The Fyffe Red Devils stormed to a second consecutive AHSAA 2A crown with a 56-7 drubbing of the Reeltown Rebels Friday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The victory sealed the Devils fourth undefeated season in the last six years while securing the programs fourth state title on the gridiron.

Fyffe quarterback Zach Pyron closed out his sophomore season with 171 yards and three scores on the ground while completing 1-of-2 passes for 20 yards and a score in route to taking home Most Valuable Player honors. Junior receiver Brody Dalton was on the receiving end of Pyron’s 20 yard touchdown strike. Ike Rowell lead all Devils not named Pyron with 125 yards on 18 attempts and a score while Malichi Mize ran for seven yards on three tries and added a fourth quarter score.

Reeltown signal caller Iverson Hooks ended the night with 31 yards through the air connecting on 4-of-11 passes. Cameron Faison lead the Rebels on the ground with 28 yards on 7 attempts while Trakevon Hughley added 20 yards on 3 carries. Eric Shaw paced the Rebel receiving corps with 2 catches for 19 yards. Shaw also accounted for Reeltown’s lone touchdown, returning a Fyffe kickoff 90 yards for a score late in the first quarter.

Reeltown closed out Matt Johnson’s fourth season in Tallapoosa County at 13-2 highlighted by a state runner-up finish and claiming their second consecutive 2A region 4 title.

Fyffe finished their dominating run though class 2A at 15-0, scoring a whopping 639 points while surrendering only 40 on defensive for an average of 2.7 points given up through 15 games. The Devils have compiled a 252-42 record since head coach Paul Benefield took the reigns of the Fyffe program in 1997.
