Auburn varsity lacrosse outlasts John Carroll to remain undefeated

Opelika, AL – The Auburn Tigers Varsity Boys’ lacrosse squad knocked off John Carroll Catholic Saturday, 7-6.

The victory improved the second ranked Tigers to 4-0 on the season while dropping the No. 12 Cavs to 0-3.

Auburn quickly took control of the game in the first half with the shots coming easily and the goals coming from five different Tigers. At the half, Auburn led John Carroll 5-0, but the Cavaliers responded with three unanswered goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters, respectively, to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

With two minutes left on the clock, Auburn Senior Attacker Gabe Forthofer took matters in his own hands and scored an unassisted Auburn goal, giving the Tigers a 7-6 advantage. But the game was far from over.

The final two minutes saw Auburn win the faceoff, miss a shot on goal and then things really became chaotic.  During Auburn’s attempted shot on goal, both John Carroll and Auburn were flagged with penalties for conduct and illegal cross-checks, resulting in Auburn playing the last 40-seconds of the game down two defenders. Despite the lack of manpower in the waning moments, Auburn’s stalwart defense rose to the occasion. John Carroll fired a short-range shot from the left wing, which was stopped by Auburn senior goalie John Stanwick. Stanwick then heaved a pinpoint clearing pass deep downfield that was caught on the run by junior Preston Cole and the Tigers were able to run out the remaining seconds to secure the win.

The Tigers will be idle for the next two weeks before welcoming the Huntsville High Panthers (4-2) to Duck Samford Stadium on Saturday, March 20th.  John Carroll returns to action Friday, March 5th, on the road at Hoover‘s (4-0) Buccaneer Stadium.
