Matt Plunkett named Brewer Patriots head football coach

Somerville, AL – The Brewer High School Patriots landed their next leader on the gridiron Thursday.  Current Locust Fork Hornets head coach and Arab native Matt Plunkett will take over as the Morgan County program’s 14th head football coach.

Planket takes the reigns of the 5A Region 8 program from Geoff Walters who led the program to a 17-44 record including an 8-30 mark and one playoff appearance over six seasons.

The Arab High School graduate began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Pittsburg State University in 2004 and spent time as an assistant at Carson Newman College and Missouri Southern State University before stepping into the prep ranks as an assistant at Texas’ Magnolia West High School.   He accepted his first head coaching position at 6A Gardendale where he led the Rockets to four straight playoff appearances, including a pair of quarterfinal births in route to a 37-22 record, including a 21-10 record in region play, over five seasons.

He spent one season at the helm of the Cullman Bearcats program, posting a 3-7 record, before moving on to Locust Fork prior to the 2019 season.  He has led the Hornets to an 11-10 record and a trip to the postseason over two seasons.

Plunkett’s career head coaching record currently stands at 51-39, 29-20 in region play, with five trips to the AHSAA playoffs and a 5-5 mark in postseason play over eight seasons.
