Take a look at the Alabama high school standouts who turned in Peak Performances during the first week of the AHSAA football season

MILESTONES

DYLAN WALKER, WINFIELD: The junior defensive end had five sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and nine total tackles as the Pirates nipped Fayette County 6-0. Winfield has now won back-to-back victories over their rivals for the first time since 1983 and 1984 – and postponed the Tigers from becoming the first school in the AHSAA to register 700 wins.Fayette County currently leads the AHSAA with an all-time varsity football record of 699-358-35 since the school played its first game in 107 years ago in 1914. T.R. Miller ranks second at 698-327-20.

JABARI STRAIT, McADORY: Caught eight passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets downed defending Class 5A state champion St. Paul’s Episcopal 21-7 to snap the Saints’ 15-game winning streak. The win was also No. 500 for McAdory’s storied program who has an overall 500-402-25 record since its first season 99 years ago in 1922. Ironically, St. Paul’s closed the 2020 season winning its 400th game overall with a 29-21 victory over Pleasant Grove in the Class 5A Super 7 state finals at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Saints are 400-160-0 overall since fielding its first football team in 1972.

JAKE JONES, SCOTTSBORO: The Wildcats’ freshman quarterback scored the winning touchdown with 5:28 left in the game to give the Wildcats a 16-12 win over in-county rival North Jackson.  Jones, the back-up to senior starter Gavin McCrary, rushed 10 times for 16 net yards and his winning touchdown. He also had six punts for a 29.5-yard average and a long kick of 35 yards. 

RIDGE HOPKINS, DONOHO: The senior quarterback completed 9-of-14 passes for 188 yards and all four touchdowns in the Falcons’ 25-0 win over Pleasant Valley. It was the Class 1A private school’s first win over a Calhoun County public school team since 2006.
   In other highlights from last week:

RUSHING

JALYN DANIELS, TALLASSEE: Gained 328 yards on 31 rush attempts and scored four touchdowns as the Tigers downed Reeltown 34-13. He averaged 10.6 yards per carry.

DEVON DANIEL, CARBON HILL: Had 15 carries for 306 yards and four touchdowns to lead Carbon Hill to a 66-8 win over Curry. The junior running back posted touchdown runs of 26, 13, 47 and 85 yards. Ten of his 15 carries went for more than 10 yards. He also scored two 2-point conversions in the season-opening win. The 66 points scored by Carbon Hill in Coach Mark Cochran’s debut was the most since the Bulldogs’ 77—0 win over Curry on Oct. 10, 1930. 

JOSEPH ANDERSON, MONTEVALLO: Had 30 carries for 303 yards and three touchdowns and returned two punts for a 53-yard average. He and contributed a sack on defense in the Bulldogs 30-13 win over Marbury.

DERRICK HOOD, SHEFFIELD:  Ran for 272 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-22 win over R.A. Hubbard.

RONNIE ROYAL III, GULF SHORES: The sophomore, who transferred from Alexandria, rushed for 253 yards on 34 carries and scored twice as the Dolphins downed Elberta 17-7.

JORDAN SMITH, ARITON: Rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries in a 38-27 win over Dale County. Smith’s TD runs were from 28, 8 and 9 yards.

JASHAWN COOPER, MONTGOMERY ACADEMY: Had 33 carries for 201 yards as the Eagles beat Saint James 38-36. MA kept the ball offensively for 34:51 of the 48-minute game.

WALKER OSTEEN, WHITE PLAINS: Rushed for 201 yards, including a 79-yard run in the final two minutes to cut Ranburne’s lead to 28-26. The Bulldogs knocked down the two-point conversion pass to seal the win. Osteen also caught four passes for 53 yards and had 11 tackles on defense.

L.T. SANDERS, GARDENDALE: Had 22 carries for 197 yards with scoring runs of 95 and 5 yards as the Rockets knocked off Sparkman 34-20. Rockets quarterback Tyler Nelsona junior making his first start, ran for 99 yards with scoring runs of 37 and 26 yards in the first half and also threw a 15-yard TD pass to Logan Fitzgerald.

LUKE REEBALS, BRIARWOOD CHRISTIAN: Totaled 119 yards rushing on 13 carries and caught four passes for 69 yards and a score to lead the Lions past Madison Academy 41-17.

MICHAEL REYNOLDS, GAYLESVILLE: Ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns (14, 1, and 7 yards) on 22 carries and added a pair of 2-point conversion runs in the Trojans’ 38-30 victory over Whitesburg Christian. Teammate Kelon Higginsalso had 166 yards on 17 carries with one TD on an 8-yard run. He contributed six tackles and two pass breakups on defense.

RYAN TURNER, WHITESBURG CHRISTIAN: Picked up 180 yards rushing on 16 carries with two touchdowns (56 and 7 yards) in the Warriors’ 38-30 loss at Gaylesville.

KIERSTAN ROGERS, THEODORE: Gained 176 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns the Bobcats beat Saraland 28-14.

MATTHEW CLARK, MEEK: Ran for 160 yards on 12 carries and scored one touchdown as the Tigers rode a strong running attack to a 41-6 win over Cold Springs. Teammates Cameron Deavorand Ethan Gracealso had big games. Deavor had nine carries for 94 yards and three TDs, and Grace gained 100 yards on 14 carries with one score.

JOHNNY MORRIS III, SPANISH FORT: Scored two crucial third-quarter touchdowns on runs of 14 and 46 yards and finished with 158 yards on 14 carries as the Toros beat Fairhope 21-10 to claim the ninth annual California Dreaming Bowl win.

TANNER MALIN, GOOD HOPE: Rushed for 153 yards on 12 carries with touchdown runs of 62 and 42 yards in a 34-28 loss to West Morgan. He also completed four passes for 41 yards and averaged 44.5 yards on two punts.

JAYLEN MURRY, WICKSBURG: Accounted for four touchdowns and had 223 all-purpose yards in the Panthers’ 53-7 win over Headland. Murry rushed for 140 yards and three TDs on 17 carries. He also scored on an 83-yard kickoff return.

PASSING

CADE OTT CARRUTH, HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE: Completed 22-of-31 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns and ran six times for 47 yards and two scores in the win over defending Class 6A state champion Pinson Valley.

BENNETT MEREDITH, HOOVER: Completed 16-of-26 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns as the Bucs downed North Gwinnett (Ga.), 38-14 in the Corky Kell Classic at Atlanta.

J.T. BLACKWOOD, HARTSELLE: Passed for 271 yards and three touchdowns (13, 18 and 34 yards) and ran for 6-yard score in a 29-0 win over Austin.

WOODS RAY, HOMEWOOD: Completed 13-of-30 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns and had 19 rush attempts for 94 yards and a score in the Patriots’ 37-34 victory over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

JAIDEN JUDE, ATHENS: Making his debut at quarterback, he rushed 18 times for 143 yards and one touchdown, was 9-of-11 passing for 204 yards and four TDs and had a pass reception covering 37 yards and another score as the Golden Eagles rallied to beat Fort Payne 42-40. He finished with 384 total yards and had a hand in all six touchdowns.

WALTER TAYLOR III, JACKSON: Was 15-of-23 passing for 304 yards and six touchdowns and also rushed eight times for 68 yards and another score as the Aggies nipped T.R. Miller 47-44.

EARL WOODS, HUEYTOWN: Was 10-of-16 passing for 170 yards and added 15 carries for 133 yards rushing with three touchdowns to lead the Gophers past Minor 57-14.

CONNER HARRELL, THOMPSON: Led the two-time defending Class 7A champion Warriors to a 55-0 win over Oxford completing 11-of-14 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns.

CANNON KYLES, HANDLEY: Was 9-of-10 passing for 186 yards and three TDs to lead the defending Class 4A state champion Tigers to a 55-21 win over Guntersville in Thursday’s AHSAA Kickoff Classic at Cramton Bowl.

JOHN COLVIN, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Completed 11-of-17 passes for 172 yards in the win over Vestavia Hills.

LUKE SCHOMBURG, SPARKMAN: Was 12-of-34 passing for 289 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-20 loss to Gardendale.

KYLE McGRINN, CLEBURNE COUNTY: Passed for 152 yards and three scores on a 9-of-16 effort and rushed 13 times for 132 yards and two TDs as Tigers beat Ohatchee 43-28 – snapping Ohatchee’s string of season-opening wins at seven in a row.He accounted for 284 yards of offense and five touchdowns. The Indians had outscored season-opening opponents 249-64 over the previous seven seasons.

ETHAN CRAWFORD, HILLCREST-TUSCALOOSA: Passed for 264 yards and three TDs and rushed for two more s in a 37-34 loss to Homewood.

REECE TYNES, FOLEY: Completed 15-of-23 passes for 226 yards as the Lions defeated rival Robertsdale 28-19.

BRADEN MOORE, ONEONTA: Was 9-of-15 passing for 212 yards and two TDs and rushed for 61 yards and two scores on 11 carries to lead the Redskins past Cleveland 41-20.

K.J. JACKSON, SAINT JAMES: Completed just 3-of-6 passes but all went for touchdowns covering 83, 71 and 55 yards in a 38-36 lost to Montgomery Academy. He finished with 209 yards passing for the night.

PARKER MARTIN, FAIRVIEW: Was a perfect 9-of-9 passing for 173 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-21 season-opening win over DAR. His TD connections covered 50, 3 and 56 yards.

DANIEL MILLER, WILLIAMSON: Passed for 201 yards and rushed for 75 in the Lions’ 530 win over LeFlore. He fired touchdown passes of 93, 23 and 18 yards and scored twice himself on runs of 1 and 64 yards.

BRAD GARRISON, TUSCALOOSA COUNTY: Was 12-of-19 passing for 152 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 50 yards and a fifth score as the Wildcats began the Coach Adam Winegarden Erawith a 59-34 victory over Paul Bryant High School. Teammate Kevin Riley added 191 yards rushing and a pair of scores.

ELI MUSSO, HALEYVILLE: The Lions’ senior quarterback was 16-for-25 with 211 yards and three touchdowns in the Lions’ 29-27 loss to Addison.

TY MIMS, BALDWIN COUNTY: Led the Tigers to a 34-0 win over Mary Montgomery accumulating 280 total yards. The Southern Miss commit passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards and a fourth TD.

TANNER BAILEY, GORDO: Completed 12-of-22 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns in the Green Wave’s season-opening 29-7 win over Oakman.

RYAN SKINNER, CULLMAN: Keyed the Bearcats’ 23-0 season-opening victory over Grissom by completing 6-of-11 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 57 yards and a score on nine carries. His TD passes covered 37 and 42 yards, respectively, to Tyler Owens ad Jake Dueland.

KALEB ROBINSON, WHITESBURG CHRISTIAN: Completed 12-of-29 pass attempts for 175 yards and two touchdowns (14 and 8 yards) and a 2-point conversion in the Warriors’ 38-30 loss at Gaylesville.

LUKE WALDROP, GADSDEN CITY: Completed 17-of-23 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Titans to a 34-0 season opening win over Etowah.

CARTER LAMBERT, BOAZ: The Pirates’ quarterback rushed 16 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns, connecting on 6-of-10 passes for 49 yards to lead the Pirates over Hayden 21-12 at Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium.

RECEIVING

KANE GRAVITT-TUCKER, HALEYVILLE: Had 10 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a 29-27 setback to Addison.

KAMERAN SHANKS, PRATTVILLE: Snagged five catches for 175 yards receiving with touchdowns of 75 and 58 yards as the Lions spoiled the Wetumpka’s debut in its new state-of-the-art stadium with a 41-13 win.

COLE PRENTICE, CALERA: Hauled in five receptions for 123 yards and three TDs – 66, 41 and 14 yards – and also had an interception on defense as the Eagles beat Demopolis 26-22.

DEFENSE

BLAKE SENN, KINSTON:  Intercepted three passes, returning one for 30 yards and a touchdown, and was in on six tackles, including two solos, in a 42-19 loss to Houston Academy.

CAIDEN MANGRUM, MUSCLE SHOALS: Blocked a punt and intercepted two passes as Muscle Shoals downed Deshler 52-14.

BEN BIDDLE, GUNTERSVILLE: Totaled 12 tackles in the Wildcats’ 55-21 loss to Handley in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic.

C.J. TOWNSEL, WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN: He and teammate McCade Wrighteach scooped up Coosa Christian fumbles and returned them for touchdowns as the Warriors beat the Conquerors 52-16.

SAM DUKES, SCOTTSBORO: Had seven tackles, including two for a loss and one sack, in the Wildcats’ 16-12 win over rival North Jackson. The senior defensive lineman also had four quarterback pressures in the victory.

KELVON McBRIDE, COTTAGE HILL CHRISTIAN: Returned an interception for a touchdown caught a 14-yard TD pass as the Warriors downed Fruitdale 24-0 in Coach Bobby Parrish’s first win at the helm of the CHCS program. Parrish last served as a head coach 10 years ago (2011) where he compiled a 96-57 record at Williamson in a head-coaching career that stretched from 1999 to 2011.  The victory over Fruitdale was the 97th of his career.

JACOB GARERI, ASBURY: Had six tackles, including three sacks, and also forced two fumbles on defense as Asbury opened the season with a 33-8 win over Gaston. On offense, he had 2 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

CHRIS PEARSON, ORANGE BEACH: Returned an interception for a score and also tacked on a touchdowns rushing and receiving in the Makos’ 50-0 win over J.F. Shields.

JAMESON COKER, COLLINSVILLE: Had an interception and a fumble recovery in the Panthers’ 34-6 loss to Section.

SPECIAL TEAMS

JOURDAN CRAWFORD, JACKSON-OLIN: The 6-2, 288-pound defensive lineman rushed for two 2-point conversions and kicked a pair of extra points in addition to his duties of dominating the line of scrimmage from his DT position as the Mustangs downed Woodlawn 50-0.

ALEX KOHN, MONTGOMERY ACADEMY: Booted a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift the Eagles past Saint James 38-36.

JERRON SMITH, HAZEL GREEN: Returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a 49-26 win over Mae Jemison.

QUINN WILSON, WETUMPKA: Returned a kickoff 89 yards in the Indians’ 41-13 loss to Prattville.

DONALD HARRIS, JEFF DAVIS: Returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdowns in a 26-12 loss to rival Sidney Lanier.

COLLIN MOON, ONEONTA: Had 92 kick return yards, 71 rushing and 52 receiving for 215 all-purpose yards in the Redskins’ 41-20 win over Cleveland. He added three offensive touchdowns.

TERUYA ISOZAKI, SCOTTSBORO: The foreign exchange student from Tokyo, Japan, booted two extra points in the Wildcats 16-12 win over North Jackson.  Playing in his first American football game, he also kicked off three times for 168 yards (56.3 average per kick).

NATHAN ZILLS, CULLMAN: Kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead at the half on the way to a 23-0 win over Grissom.
