Tabernacle falls to Evangel Christian in conference opener

Montgomery, AL – The Tabernacle Christian Torches fell to CFA conference foe Evangel Christian 52-14 Friday night in Montgomery.  

The Evangel Lions, who are kicking-off their second season in the CFA after spending 17 years competing in the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA), held a 14-0 advantage over the Torches at the end of the first period.  Tabernacle fought back with a pair of scores in the second to trim the Lion’s lead to 38-14 at halftime.

After the break, Evangel tacked on a pair of scores while holding the visitors out of the endzone to secure their second victory of the young season. 

Torches quarterback Clinton Chase posted another strong showing in his second career start under center.  The junior finished the night with 118 yards through the air, completing 6-of-15 passes and a pair of scores while tacking on 79 on 16 carries on the ground.  Junior running back Trae Andrews added 12 yards on four attempts. 

Daniel McCormick lead the Torches receiving corps with four receptions for 105 yards including hauling in both of Tabernacle’s touchdown receptions.  Sophomore receiver Reed Chase caught one pass for 10 yards and Bryant Howard snagged a two-point-conversion grab. 

On defense, Andrews and Clinton Chase made five stops, Daniel Walton and Josiah Jones added for tackles, Bryant Howard and Troy Box accounted for three and Able Sharpe, Jacob Beasley and Ethan Glass tacked on two stops apiece.  

Tabernacle returns to action next Friday night against CFA newcomer Success Unlimited Academy (1-1) in Gardendale.  Evangel takes the week off before traveling to Millbrook to face New Life Academy September 10th.
