Thompson’s Bodie Bubel’s Perfect 300 Game Highlights AHSAA State Bowling Action

Sparkman’s Girls, Hoover’s Boys Claim Top Seeds for Friday’s Final Round

Gadsden, AL – Thompson High School junior Bodie Bubel grabbed the spotlight early Thursday afternoon by rolling just the second perfect 300 game in AHSAA State Bowling Championship history.

Bubel had 12 rolls and 12 strikes to write his name alongside Gadsden City’s Jon Kilgo, who rolled the first 300 game in state tourney history in the first round of the 2016 State Tourney. That feat shined the spotlight on the AHSAA’s first-ever state bowling championships for boys and girls and Bubel’s feat showed in part just how far high school bowling has come since then.

The State Championships being held at The Alley Bowling Center in Gadsden, has gone from all schools competing in one division to two completely separate divisions in the 2022 State Bowling Championships. It has also seen the growth of the sport explode in all four corners of the state.

Defending girls’ 6A/7A state champion Sparkman, coached by Lisa Ivey, opened strong rolling a 929 in the first game of Thursday’s traditional three-game set that is used to determine the seeding for Friday’s Championship Bracket Baker format head-to-head competition to take a 108-pin lead over their closest completion after the first game. By the time game was completed, that lead had stretched to 216 pins. Sparkman totaled 876 in the third game to claim the top seed for Friday’s championship play with 2,536 total pins. Spain Park captured No. 2 seed with a 2,296 total – 240 pins behind the Lady Senators.

Hoover was almost as dominating in the boys’ Class 6A/7A competition. The Bucs, coached by Dustin Edgar, rolled up a 2,805 total in the traditional round play with a solid 992 total in the third game to win No. 1 seed position by 132 pins over runner-up Sparkman.

Spain Park senior Cole Henson captured the boys’ Top Medalist honors with very solid 214-246-223 – 683 series. The Bucs placed two bowlers in the top four with Alex Lee finishing strong with a 242 to close out a 663 series which ranked second to Henson. Carter Hughes, also a sophomore, was fourth for Hoover with a 621. Bubel had a 138 and 190 to go with his perfect game and was third overall at 628.

Sparkman placed three girls in Medalist group with sophomore Jenna Webber capturing top medalist honors with s 194-224-170 – 588 series. Senior teammate Emily Lindsey was three strokes back at 585 and Spain Park sophomore Emma Hawkins took third with a 561 total. Her 244 in the second game was the second best single-game score in the girls’ 6A/7A competition. Thompson senior Gracie Connelly opened with a 262, which turned out to be the best single game in girls’ competition all DAY. She finished fourth with a 546 series.

The bowling action gets underway at 7 a.m., Friday, for 1A/5A with the championship bracket featuring three rounds of head-to-head team bowling in a best 4-of-7 Baker format. No traditional rounds will be rolled Friday. The 6A/7A championship bracket will begin following the conclusion of the 1A/5A finals.

The Class 1A/5A and Class 6A/7A championship matches, set for approximately 11 a.m., and 4 p.m., respectively, will be televised lived over the AHSAA TV Network and live-streamed over the NFHS Network and WOTM TV.
